these twelve sketches emerged as a dialogue to probe possibilities of using a natural medium with which i first experimented in lithic dust . wax + wanethose works revealed a spectrum of effects of the medium, from uncertain to compelling, that left me wanting to better understand its sculptural, layering, and reworking qualities— to explore, to dance with this living medium.

the natural found object—stone, wood, and bone—that is the central medium of my work is essential to exploring the cultural, social, and historical contexts through which i locate myself in this world, and it gives rise to the ideas, conundrums, and subtle revolutions that i wish to explore and foment. in the past, i have considered liquid mediums and paints as ancillary to my work. with this medium, there emerges a new matter, and with it new forms will manifest for amplifying the voice of the environment, of cultures, of ways of life struggling to endure beneath the weight of modernity.
