lithic dust . wax + wane continues my exploration of the color, texture, form, and materiality of stone from desert geographies. this series represents my first significant work since moving on from using hydrocarbon-based materials (acrylic mediums and synthetic pigments) in the base painting. for wax + wane, the base painting is produced using a beeswax and plant-based medium and organic pigments. the series of 9 compositions reference a moon cycle i experienced while in the Superstition Mountains of the Sonoran Desert while exploring the material properties of the natural medium and its interplay with welded tuff of the Superstitions.
